Charles White Band: Not Easily Amused
Charles White is a longtime veteran of the Pacific Northwest
blues scene having made
Seattle his home base since he left Houston in the 1960's. He's solidly
in the traditional
Texas Blues singer as frontman mold a la Frankie Lee/ Bobby Bland
which isn't surprising
as he used to open Duke/Peacock revues. He's got a fine blues voice
and he's molded his
band to suit his Texas blues sound, and even though White's old enough
to be the father of
most of his band mates it's obvious they revere and respect him and
the due's he's paid. Very
few African Americans remain on the Seattle and Portland blues scenes,
a far cry from the
1950's and 60's when easily two-three dozen hot blues acts vied for
club gigs throughout
Washington and Oregon. White, and good friends Isacc Scott and Mel
Solomon are about the only Black veterans left on the scene and notoriously
little
has been done to document the Seattle/Portland blues history, something
that needs to be
corrected. White is determined to keep the flame burning and this
CD is a perfect example
of what Charles White's blues are all about. "Not Easily Amused"
has a 'live' sound/feel
and big blues review size band; Six pieces behind White, including
two saxes and Hammond
organ. This is a very polished outfit and undoubtedly they are a
portable party starter
with their brand of good-time uptempo West Coast/Texas R&B and
blues.
Very few blues vocalists on the scene today can sing as good as Charles
White, and that
includes Chicago and New Orleans. For some reason the Washington/Oregon
blues
scene doesn't get much coverage in major blues publications which
is a shame and somewhat
ridiculous as there's more blues clubs, fans and blues radio shows
here than anywhere else
in North America (and more blues festivals too!). If you'd like to
hear one of the best blues
outfits from this neck-of-the-woods check out "Not Easily Amused."
Healthy competition
guarantees strong acts and with the intense competition up here we
get top value for our
hard-earned bucks. Charles White has been awarded "Entertainer of
the Year" from the
Washington Blues Society and it's quite evident as to why when you
listen to this
CD. 4 bottles for a pretty good presentation from a veteran vocalist
who deserves to be
much better known. He's won over all the blues fans in Washington
and Oregon, now it's time
to expand a little. Call (425)303-8761 if you'd like to purchase
a copy, or book Charles
White for your club/festival.

This is one of those regional bands that have no recording
contract, so there is no record
label. I know the cd is available at Sports Cards and Blues Headquarters,
because that's
where I got my copy. I can't tell you a whole lot about this band, other
than I've met several of the band members
over the years, and heard the band as recently as February of this
year at Larry's in Pioneer
Square. Of course, you know already that Charles White this
release should solidify that knowledge
for you. Band members include John Savage- baritone sax; Scott Lind-lead
& rhythm guitar;
Rolf Larson-Hammond B3, harmonica & vocals; Bill Blackstone-alto
& tenor sax; Pete Langhans-
drums; Bill Gerdes-bass; special guests on various tracks include
Pat Moran-trombone; Paul Harshman-
trumpet; Rich Dangel-lead guitar; Tony Williams- drums; and Norm
Bellas-Hammond B3 & valve trombone.
Whew! A vertible who's who of Seattle's top musicians! There
are fifteen tracks on this cd, and all
of them were written by various band members. I'd like to to pick
out a couple of them and
tell you that this one is my favorite or check this one out, it smokes,
but I'd have to do
that with all of them, this is that good. Charles and the guys have
got the blues down! This cd is
of the blues variety! This cd sounds like the band sounds live. The feel
of that small, dark & smoky club, you can
smell the beer, the sweaty bodies dancin'... sultry, belly rubbin'
sax, guitar solos that
make me sweat, vocals that put you into the song. You'll leave
this one in your player. I know
it. You'll hear selected cuts on the Blues Show with Ted & Dean,
10pm to midnight every
Sunday, need to go out and buy it.

Press Release
The Charles White Band, man how do I start? This regional headliner
is based out of the Seattle area
and sports seven members with a horn section of High Energy Rythm
and Blues. Charles White, again in my
opinion, is the James Brown of Rythm and Blues. This man does not
touch an instrument except the mic and
from the moment he takes the stage stuffs the crowd in his back pocket
and does not and absolutely will not
release them until he has lathered them in his own private party.
If you have not seen this performer,
well, all's I can say is don't miss the show. This man is a SHOWMAN.
This is my opinion, but I do not
stand-alone. Bottom line if you can't dance to his groups music,
well, you've heard me say it before,
"You might as well check into the morgue because you must be dead".
